2. Something at the window “Beans cannot pay for our supper,” said his mother, worried. Jack planted them beside the cottage and went to bed. During the night, roots reached down and a green shoot reached up. By morning, enormous leaves brushed his window. The stalk vanished into the clouds.
The curling wooden beanstalk grows tall when touched, lifting its broad painted leaves toward the cloud castle. Jack stays at its base, and a large wooden giant sleeps in his chair above.
3. Above the clouds Jack climbed from one thick stem to the next. Up he went, past the chimney, past the birds, and into a cool white cloud. A broad leaf held him while he looked around. Ahead stretched a shining path, and at its end stood a castle.
Jack moves upward beside the tall beanstalk when its broad leaf is touched. The leaf dips beneath the cloud castle, while a large wooden giant sleeps in his chair on the cream cloud platform.
4. A very large doorstep The castle door was taller than Jack’s whole cottage. He pushed it open just enough to slip inside. There were enormous boots beside an enormous chair. In the chair slept an enormous giant. His snores made the spoons tremble. Then Jack heard a tiny, lovely sound.
Jack and a golden wooden harp stand at cloud level beside a tall castle arch. A much broader giant sleeps in a wooden chair with his head bowed and eyes closed. Touching the castle door swings it inward; the beanstalk stays rooted below.
5. The harp’s wish A golden harp stood on the table, playing all by itself. “Hello,” whispered Jack. “Do you know any songs about birds?” asked the harp. “I have never heard a real one.” Its strings gave a small shiver. “Will you take me where the birds sing?”
The golden wooden harp stands beside Jack at the cloud castle. Its six separate strings quiver when touched. The giant sleeps in his chair beside the open castle door, above the green beanstalk.
6. Footsteps behind them Jack lifted the harp. It was so happy that it rang out one bright note. The giant opened his eyes. “Where is my music going?” he thundered. Jack startled and hurried through the door, holding the harp close. Behind him came the giant’s great, thumping footsteps.
Touching the harp moves Jack and the golden harp away from the open castle door toward the beanstalk. The seated giant lifts his head and opens his painted eyes; his chair and planted boots stay on the cloud platform.
7. Down the green ladder Jack reached the beanstalk and began to climb down. The giant stopped at the edge of the cloud. “That stem is much too narrow for me!” Down went Jack, leaf by leaf, until his feet found the garden. His mother ran out and wrapped him in a hug.
Jack and the golden harp descend beside the green beanstalk to the wooden ground when it is touched. The awake giant stays seated beside the castle high above on the cream cloud platform.
8. A song for the sky By summer, the beanstalk gave Jack and his mother baskets of beans to sell. At the cottage window, a robin sang beside the harp. The harp answered, and their music rose into the clouds. Even the giant settled down to listen. Jack opened the window wide.
Jack and the golden harp rest at the foot of the tall beanstalk. Touching the harp sets its strings quivering, while the awake giant sits in his wooden chair on the cloud platform beside the castle.
Imagine what else might be above the clouds. Tell a new part of Jack’s adventure, or draw a beanstalk with a surprising place at the top.
